SUSTAINABILITY & WELFARE

Wool is our business. It’s in our DNA. Dugdale Bros & Co have been utilising this truly sustainable resource for almost 127 years.

SUSTAINABLE BY NATURE

Sustainability is nothing new for us. We have been pioneering the sustainable process in the manufacturing of our cloth for 127 years and it is at the heart of everything we do. It’s not a trend, buzzword or marketing piece for us. It’s a way of life.

We manufacture all our woollen and worsted cloths in the UK, where we harness renewable natural resources to manufacture our product and work selectively with local suppliers to reduce our carbon footprint at every opportunity.

FROM SHEEP TO SUIT

We pride ourselves on our total commitment to sustainability. We adhere to strict testing and assessment protocols to ensuring our product is the best it can be from both a quality and ecological standpoint.

We’re passionate about wool and woollen trade. That’s why we take enormous pride in sourcing the best wool possible for spinning and weaving here in Huddersfield.

We work with suppliers that we know and trust to take the world’s best wool from sheep to suit, ensuring each step along the way is performed to the highest standard by the best possible people. It’s unique natural properties make it the perfect base for all kinds of cloths.

All our woollen fabrics are manufactured using ethically sourced wool from sheep that are reared humanely on commercial farms that meet the highest standards of animal welfare legislation. Along with our spinners, we are against the highly unethical practice of ‘mulesing’ in Australia. We therefore only work with spinners who do not partake in this practice.

““By manufacturing locally, using raw materials and employing innovative techniques we have developed in-house, we are at the forefront of sustainability in the woollen trade. We can confidently say that no-one does it quite like Dugdale.””
ROB CHARNOCK, CHAIRMAN AT DUGDALE BROS & CO LTD.

A TOTAL COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

  • We are committed to ensuring that all our wool-based cloths are processed in the UK by benchmark companies, who work in compliance with the British Standard regulations that govern environmental impact and working conditions. That’s why we only work with a select group of local manufacturers to weave, dye and finish our cloth.

All their factories are based in West Yorkshire, within 10 miles of our Huddersfield headquarters. This helps keep our carbon footprint low, with our product traveling the shortest of distances between manufacturers before being delivered for safe, optimal storage at the Dugdale Towers.

  • All our woollen fabrics are manufactured using ethically sourced wool from sheep that are reared humanely on commercial farms that meet the highest standards of animal welfare legislation.
Along with our spinners, we are against the highly unethical practice of ‘mulesing’ in Australia. We therefore only work with spinners who specifically source from suppliers who do not partake in this practice.

We are also committed to supporting the Australian wool industry in their mission to find alternative remedies which allow their farms to be classified as ‘organic’.

  • Our products are manufactured with the aim of having minimal impact on the consumer and the environment.

We never use wool containing harmful pesticides and periodically perform tests to ensure the wool we source has no contaminants.

We only work with manufacturers who are fully compliant with the EEC directive on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (I.P.P.C.). This means they are committed to ensuring the chemicals and dyestuffs used cause no harm through entry into the atmosphere, the watercourses or the manufacturing process.

  • Huddersfield’s valleys and rivers flow with an exceptional quality soft water which filters through layers of ancient shale on its journey down from the millstone grit Pennine hills surrounding the town.

This world-famous water is integral to our manufacturing process. We draw it directly from the source for use in the scouring of our raw wool and in the intricate finishing of our legendary fabrics.
It is this remarkable and unique ingredient that helps give our cloth its distinctly Dugdale feel and keeps our processes truly sustainable.

  • All dyestuffs used by Dugdale Bros & Co. in the manufacturing process meet the criteria for the international Oeko-Tex 100 system which ensures our products are tested for the following:

    • Banned MAK amines, found in specific dyestuffs
    • Carcinogenic and allergy-inducing dyestuffs
    • Pesticides
    • Phenols
    • Chlorinated aromatic compounds
    • Extractable heavy metals
    • Colour Fastness
    • Ph-value
    • Phthalates (baby articles)
