Huddersfield Headquarters

Our Victorian-era headquarters – known as ‘The Towers’ – has been Dugdale Bros & Co.’s home for more than half a century. Its Victorian architecture reflects the rich textile heritage of Huddersfield and we’re proud to be its custodians to this day.

HISTORY OF OUR HUDDERSFIELD HQ

Huddersfield, nestled in the heart of West Yorkshire where the rivers Colne and Holme converge, boasts a rich heritage that dates back to the early days of wool processing. The town’s natural resources—its pure, soft water and abundant local sheep—enabled early settlers to transform raw wool into fine cloth using traditional hand-spinning and weaving techniques. Over the centuries, this modest cottage industry evolved into a sophisticated, mill-based system that laid the foundation for a globally revered textile tradition.

What sets Huddersfield apart is its perfect blend of natural advantages, expert craftsmanship, and relentless innovation. During the Industrial Revolution, Huddersfield’s manufacturers quickly embraced mechanisation, seamlessly integrating advanced machinery with time-honoured skills. The “Made in Huddersfield, England” label became synonymous with superior worsted and woollen fabrics—so trusted that kings, princes, and renowned tailors worldwide sought out its products. This unique confluence of resources and expertise created an environment where quality was never compromised, establishing Huddersfield as a benchmark for excellence in cloth production.

At the height of its textile boom in the early twentieth century, Huddersfield’s mills employed tens of thousands of workers. By 1911, around 22,000 people were employed in the local textile trade. Although the industry has transformed over the past hundred years due to global competition and technological change, the legacy of mass employment and community identity forged by cloth manufacturing endures. Even as modern methods have reduced the direct workforce, the town’s historic mills continue to remind us of a bygone era when Huddersfield was the beating heart of Britain’s textile industry.
